Permanent magnet motor breakthrough

Toyota's Prius introduced the permanent magnet synchronous motor to mass-produced vehicles, setting the standard for efficient electric motor design in hybrid and electric cars. #motor #invention

Single phase low power synchronous motor part of the synchronous electric clock mechanism built in a mechanical time switch, running at 14 volt and 50 Hertz consuming 4 milliampere. The rotor is made of a permanent magnet with a gear wheel glued on (on the back). The coil's magnetic poles of the metal stator have 3 teeth and 2 gaps as a replacement of 2 complementary poles. That design results in 5 pairs of poles. The permanent magnetic rotor has matching 5 pairs of poles. The revolution of the rotor is fixed 600 revs (50 Hz * 60 s / 5 pole pairs). The upper cover was removed for taking the photo.
