The General Charter of Jewish Liberties, known as the Statute of Kalisz was issued by Boleslaw the Pious, September 8, 1264. The Statute granted wide-ranging and unprecedented legal rights to the Jews of Poland, including freedom of worship, and the right to trade and travel. Arthur Szyk reminded both Poles and Jews in the 20th century of this historic precedent through his seminal work, a visual interpretation of the text Statute of Kalisz (published in 1932), executed in the style of a medieval illuminated manuscript; the 45 paintings were exhibited widely in Poland. This Polish and French title page or frontispiece shows Casimir III the Great enthroned.

Union of Lublin

Signing of the Union of Lublin Source — Wikipedia, "Timeline of Polish history" (16th century):

During the Livonian War (1578-1582), between Ivan the Terrible of Russia and Stefan Batory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the city was besieged by the Polish and Lithuanian forces. The joined army failed to capture the city, but forced Russia to return other territories and gained Livonia. The siege was the setting of this painting. The siege of Pskov from the Polish perspective: Batory at Pskov, 1581/1582. Painting by Jan Matejko in 1872. Matejko's allegoric painting illustrates the concept of romantic nationalism: the Muscovites are represented doing homage to the Polish king, which appear victorious, although in reality Pskov never fell to the Poles, as the conflict ended with negotiations before the siege was concluded.
