The 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship was a motor racing championship for Formula One cars. It was the 73rd running of the Formula One World Championship. Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen dominated the season, winning a record-breaking 15 races and clinching his second consecutive Drivers' Championship. The season featured major new technical regulations, the debut of the Miami Grand Prix, and the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Russian Grand Prix Cancelled

Formula 1 announced the termination of its contract with the Russian Grand Prix promoter following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, meaning the race scheduled for September 25 would not take place and no future races would be held in Russia.

Season Opener in Bahrain

The 2022 season began with the Bahrain Grand Prix under sweeping new technical regulations. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc won the race, with his teammate Carlos Sainz finishing second, signaling Ferrari's return to competitiveness. Reigning champion Max Verstappen retired late due to a fuel system issue.

Miami Grand Prix Debut

Formula 1 held its first-ever Miami Grand Prix at the newly constructed Miami International Autodrome, a street circuit built around Hard Rock Stadium. Max Verstappen won the race, cutting into Charles Leclerc's championship lead. The event was a major commercial spectacle attended by numerous celebrities.

Sainz Claims First Career Win at Silverstone

Carlos Sainz Jr. claimed his first Formula 1 victory at the British Grand Prix after starting from pole position. The race featured a dramatic first-lap crash involving Zhou Guanyu, whose car flipped over the barriers, but he emerged largely unharmed.

Verstappen's Remarkable Belgian GP Drive

Verstappen Clinches Second World Title in Japan

Max Verstappen won the Japanese Grand Prix in wet conditions and clinched his second consecutive World Drivers' Championship. Initially there was confusion about whether full points would be awarded in a shortened race, but the FIA confirmed Verstappen had secured the title.

Red Bull Wins Constructors' Championship

Max Verstappen won the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, and in doing so secured the Constructors' Championship for Red Bull Racing, their first since 2013. The achievement came just days after the death of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz.

Season Finale in Abu Dhabi

The 2022 season concluded at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen claimed his record-breaking 15th win of the season, surpassing Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton's previous record of 13 wins in a single season. Verstappen finished the year with 454 points, the most ever scored in a single season.
